“Way Down In The Hole” — The Blind Boys of Alabama
I’ve been told this Tom Waits tune was the theme song of HBO’s The Wire. I wouldn’t know; I only watch SPEED Channel. I do know lead vocalist Jimmy Carter stepped into some full-size footwear during this October 8, 2006 gig at the Tall Stacks Festival in Cincinnati, a stop on the Blind Boys’ first tour without ailing quarterback Clarence Fountain, who founded the group at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind in 1939. Not a typo. This one’s for Messyheadblues, the music blog pioneer and longtime Tom Waits fan club member who accompanied me to my first Blind Boys show, circa 1996.
