“Rainbow’s Cadillac” — Bela Fleck & The Flecktones with Bruce Hornsby
I eagerly awaited this show for three months when it was announced that Hornsby would join the Flecktones for their entire Friday night headlining set so the resulting supergroup could take turns collaborating on each other’s songs. A titanic meeting of musical kindred spirits, I wanted to hear Bela’s banjo on Bruce’s hits and Hornsby’s piano on Fleck’s jazzy journeys. They didn’t disappoint, and to the wonder of all, bassist Victor Wooten, sax player Jeff Coffin, and percussionist(?) Futureman were every bit their equal. This June 19, 1998 show was a watershed event for me; Telluride at its most jaw-dropping. You can stream the encore jam over here. And head over to It’s Great To Be Alive for more life-affirming stuff.
