“Pancho and Lefty” — Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard
As part of a rare duet show at La Zona Rosa in Austin, Texas on December 3, 1997, these old titans of outlaw country offered this warm rendition of the Townes Van Zandt tune they took to the top of the country music charts back in 1983. Willie is stellar, as always. Merle starts his verse strong, but soon embarks on debunking the myth that he remembers the lyrics to the song. No matter, these two together is a treat anytime. I’m sharing this here as a belated birthday present to The Australian, a lover of live music and a great friend.
